Spreadwing

This guy (and several of his buddies) have been hanging around the pond for the last few days.

Ok, I know it’s a spreadwing based on wing posture. The question is which one. They can be tough to distinguish, but according to Odonata Central, only two species of Lestes occur in Carter County – Elegant Spreadwing (L. inaequalis) and Southern Spreadwing (Lestes australis.) We also have the Great Spreadwing (Archilestes grandis) which this is not, since there is no diagnostic bright yellow thoracic stripe. It’s is also obviously not L. inaequalis) so that leaves us with our most likely suspect – L. australis, the Southern Spreadwing.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
