Gomphus sp.

A couple of evenings ago, I walked out the back door, camera in hand, and these two immediately came flying up from the grass at the edge of the sidewalk:

As I approached closer trying to photograph them, they kept changing locations, moving 15 or 20 feet before settling to the ground again, invariably in one of the many bare spots in my “lawn.” They stayed coupled the entire time. This is probably the best image I captured

There’s no sense of scale in the photos, but they are rather small, less than 2″. I’m reasonably sure that they’re either Plains (Gomphus externus) or Pronghorn (G. grazlinellus) Clubtails, but those two are VERY difficult to differentiate. I posted these photos on Bug Guide, hoping for some assistance, but surprisingly, have not had a response as of yet. Descriptions I’ve found generally place externus near running water, otherwise it’s a grazlinellus which also tend to be slightly smaller. This, of course, would not be the first time a species were found outside it’s preferred habitat, but I’m still leaning towards grazlinellus until I find out otherwise.
