Just a few more things Steve and I found while on Skyline looking at the Serviceberry from a previous post. Black Oak (Quercus velutina) Post Oak (Quercus stellata) Shorleaf Pine (Pinus echinata) Southern Black Haw (Viburnum rufidulum) Hoary Puccoon (Lithospermum canescens) Cinquefoil (Potentilla simplex) It’s Monday, so that means I spent my lunch hour walking around Watercress. I found a few new blooms including American Bladdernut (Staphylea trifolia,) Mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum) and (Lyre-leaf Sage (Salvia lyrata.) But the find of the day came from under a log along the spring branch. A Rove Beetle for sure, I believe to be Philonthus politus. [...] When Dayna and I left the house this morning, the plan was to go to an out of the way spot on Rogers Creek and catch and photograph a few fish. We did end up doing that – and I’ll cover that in a separate post tonight or tomorrow – but we found so [...] A few minutes spent wandering about the yard turned up a freshly bloomed Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida,) a “puddling” female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus,) a male Common Baskettail (Epitheca cynosura) – a new record for me at this property – and a predatory fly (robber fly probably, but can’t really tell) with it’s lunch. Redbud (Cercis canadensis) Bellwort (Uvullaria grandiflora) Wild Sweet Williams (Phlox divaricata) Wake Robin or Trillium (Trillium recurvatum) Wild Ginger (Asarum canadense) Cottonwood (Populus deltoides) These blooms absolutely covered a large area of the river bottom, but all that were still [...] |
